Welcome back students and parents!
Here's what we will be doing in our classroom this week:
Phonics / Reading
Our first unit will focus on the alphabet. This week we will begin reviewing letters through poems and letter activities. We will focus on the letters: Aa, Bb, Cd, Dd, Ee, and Ff.
Our Word Wall Words (WWW) for this week will be:
I, see, my, like, to, a
We will write these words in the agendas and practice writing them in sentences like we will start to do for homework next week.
Math
This week we will be reviewing concepts from Kindergarten. We will review numbers 1 through 12 and number formation for all of these. We will also review comparing numbers and counting forward and back.
Writing
This week we will begin our handwriting series. We will start by learning the correct way to sit and hold the pencil. We will also talk about and label the lines of the first grade writing paper. We will also work on vertical lines.
Social Studies
This week we will use this time to go over class and school rules and procedures. We will talk about fire drill and bus safety as well as take a tour of the campus. We will also begin to share our All About Me posters.
Homework
Tuesday - read and start All About Me posters (please bring in by Friday)
Wednesday - read and All About Me posters (please bring in by Friday)
Thursday - read and All About Me posters (please bring in by Friday)
Reading Log
There will be a reading log taped to inside of your child's daily folder. You should use this log to track your child's reading by signing and dating a block each night. I will then put a sticker on the block acknowledging that the reading was done. We are working on getting a reading contest / incentive going in the school. At the beginning of the year this should be with parents helping their child to read and as the year progresses your child should be be reading more and more!
Agenda Books
In first grade we use agenda books! Your child will be writing their homework in there everyday as well as their Word Wall Words (WWW) every Monday morning. I will also write the color of your child's day and a little about something we learned that day. Please initial the block that I write in so that I know you have read the agenda. If there is a note that I need to see in the morning, please put that in your child's folder as I do not always see all the agenda books in the morning.
Book Orders
Scholastic book orders are due by Friday Sept 17th.
